The Red Run doubles as the downhill for the XC loop. However, don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s easy. It’s not as steep as the other tracks, but it does contain a few surprises to keep riders on their toes, with off-camber rooty sections, technical switchbacks and a boardwalk section at the end. This run is used by riders getting used to the steeper, tighter riding of Aston Hill and is a great trail to build skills in an environment where you can ride safely and as fast as your confidence allows.
Is this the trail for you?
The Red Run is suitable for all riders and is especially appropriate for those starting out riding downhill. Riders unused to more technical or ‘big hill’ riding should take extra care. It contains small jumps and technical elements that can all be rolled over.
Trail surface types
Constructed trails and/or natural features, raised boardwalk. Some challenging sections. Chalk and clay surface which is slippery when wet. Includes levels of exposure and/or risk.
Gradients and technical trail features (TTFs)
Will include a range of small and medium TTFs including steep downhill sections, small jumps, small drops and ‘North Shore’ style raised boardwalk.
Suggested fitness level
A good standard of fitness and technical skills.
What we recommend
- We advise a helmet, gloves and body armour and recommend you familiarise yourself with the track before attacking at full speed.
- Beginners and newer riders should avoid when wet due to the clay / chalk / roots / flint make-up of the local topography. Flint and trees are the enemy of flesh and bones!
- For your own safety, do not push back up the trail! Use the push path provided.

Hi guys, I am a novice rider. I have ridden cardinham woods in bodmin (if you know) and that is the extent of my experience, I want to do more and wondered if Aston Hill was a safe track for me to learn on?
I ride a Cube AMS 120 Race 29er and my fitness is improving so any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks
Sam
Hi Sam,
I personally don’t know any of the woods around Bodmin, but Aston Hill is a great place to learn. The top sections of the XC and Ricochet are gently rolling and a little technical, and get steeper and more technical as you go further down the hill. There are rollable lines round all features on the downhills (excluding Surface to Air), so there is always a safe / bailout option as your skills progress. There’s also a guide to all the downhills here on the site - http://www.rideastonhill.co.uk/downhills/
Have a look thorough the FAQs (http://www.rideastonhill.co.uk/about/faqs/) and Essentials (http://www.rideastonhill.co.uk/about/essentials/) pages for more info.
Thanks,
Neil
